A Message from the Deputy Chair:

Hello everyone and welcome to the KCDMUN Political and Decolonization Committee! As a past chair in other MUN debates, I’d be more than happy to continue leading on these debate sessions, on what I believe to be one of the most relevant issues known to our modern political climate.

I expect our committee to be full  of thoughtful dialogue and debate between our members, and cannot wait to see the many decisions and contributions that we will come to. However, it’s important to remember this will be a place of community and discussion. Let’s not make enemies here!

I’m excited to see how our debate will go, and am happy with the positive reception that this idea overall has gathered from you!

Thank you and we will see you soon!

The Role of Russia in Former Soviet Republics

The influence of Russia in former Soviet republics remains a critical issue in contemporary geopolitics, affecting the sovereignty, security, and political landscapes of countries like Belarus and Moldova. This session will examine how Russia employs a variety of tactics—including political pressure, economic leverage, and military interventions—to maintain its dominance in these regions. Delegates will discuss the implications of this influence for national sovereignty and regional stability, particularly in the context of rising authoritarianism and the aspirations of these nations to align more closely with the West. The debate will focus on strategies for empowering local governance, promoting democratic reforms, and enhancing international support for these countries in their pursuit of self-determination. By addressing these challenges, the council aims to foster a deeper understanding of the historical and contemporary factors at play and develop actionable recommendations for supporting the sovereignty and democratic aspirations of former Soviet republics.
